What Should I Do in the First 72 Hours After a Car Accident in Roanoke?
The three days after a crash on I-581, Route 419, or a Roanoke side street shape everything that follows — your health, your evidence, and your claim. Here is the checklist I give family and friends, hour by hour.
At the Scene
- Call 911. Get police to the scene — Roanoke City Police in the city, Virginia State Police on the interstates — and get the report number.
- Photograph everything: vehicles from multiple angles, plates, the roadway, signals, skid marks, and your visible injuries.
- Collect names and cell numbers from every witness before they drive off.
- Say nothing about fault — not even a polite “I am sorry.”
Day One: Medical Care
Accept EMS evaluation, and if you decline transport, get examined the same day — at Carilion Roanoke Memorial, an urgent care, or your doctor. Adrenaline masks injuries; concussions, soft-tissue damage, and internal injuries often surface later. From a claim standpoint, a same-week medical record connecting your injuries to the crash is the single most valuable document you can create. Who else to notify? See my guide on who to call after a car accident in Roanoke.
Days Two and Three: Protect the Claim
- Notify your own insurance company (a policy requirement) — but give the other driver’s insurer nothing beyond basics, and no recorded statement.
- Write down your own memory of the crash while it is fresh.
- Start a folder: photos, the report number, bills, receipts, work absences.
- Stay off social media — adjusters read it.
- Request nearby business camera footage be preserved, or have a lawyer send preservation letters; many systems overwrite within days. Here is the full evidence checklist.
When to Call a Lawyer
If anyone was hurt, the answer is: within these same 72 hours. Early involvement means evidence gets preserved, statements do not get given, and the insurance company deals with your Roanoke personal injury lawyer instead of you. The consultation is free — and the first three days are when it helps most.
